Vicmap Lite - Road Line - 1:250,000 to 1:5,000,000
dataset:
VMLITE_TR_ROAD
This layer is part of Vicmap Lite and contains line features representing the road network. Vicmap Lite datasets are suited
for use between scales of 1: 250,000 and 1 : 5 million. The linework was sourced from Vicmap Transport. The level of attribute
information, the number of features and the number of vertices has been simplified to suit the 1: 250,000 - 1 : 5 million
scale range. The concept of a Scale Use Code has been introduced to help control the level of detail displayed.

- GENERAL Level of detail reduced to suit 1:250,000 - 1:5 million scale range. Redundant attributes removed, Scale Use Code attribute added and populated. Number of verticies reduced using an enhanced Douglas and Peucker simplification algorithm. DETAIL Automatic selection of road class 0-3 Delete majority small Freeaway ramps Onscreen selection of significant 4-7 class roads, or misclassified segments for completness and visual correctness as per selection process description below; The filtered roads were overlaid over the full TR_Roads dataset to find inconsistencies and gaps that might have arisen. The location dataset, built up area as well as PLM 100 was added to give context to the roads layer. The state was then manually scanned to fill gaps with roads of class 4-7 where; " There was a major road or track through a remote State Forest or National Park ie Murraville South Road which is the only road within 130km that connects the Western and Malee Highways. This was half the distance if one travelled along a major road. #1 Roads that connected small towns or Localities were added. These were the shortest link by far between the towns. #2 Gaps in existing class 0-3 were filled. These were likely candidates for reclassification #3 Roads that ended in the middle of nowhere were also looked at to see if they ended there indeed or there was a continuation at a lower class #4 The four freeways under construction (Eastlink etc) were also added to the layer #5 The whole layer was then checked by another operator for consistency and errors. A copy of the layer with the selected TR_ROADS was recently created as master containing all original attributes. This can be used as a basis for updating Vicmap Lite. Declared Roads need to take precedence over local roads. For example Ballarat Road in Deer Park needs to be called Western Highway. Attributing Vicmap Lite could be a complex process as there is no aspatial link in the data. DSE declared Public Roads will feature in this dataset. This is an opportunity to upgrade the classification of roads in State Forest Data segments are then combined to form one line string named Western Highway. Data is then weeded to obtain the generalised data set

Quality
Attribute Quality
- Comments
- For the TR_ROADS product attribute accuracy ranges between a 1% to 5% error. For this product attribute accuracy will be better since, the vast majority of data is composed of the higher class, ie (highways instead of minor back roads).
Positional Accuracy
- Comments
- The source line work was generalised using an enhanced Douglas and Peucker simplification algorithm. The algorithm keeps so-called critical points that depict the essential shape of a line and removes all other points. The algorithm connects the end nodes of an arc with a "trend line". The distance of each vertex to the trend line is measured perpendicularly. Vertices closer to the line than the tolerance are eliminated. A 30m tolerance was used on this dataset
Conceptual Consistency
- Comments
- The allowable error in attribute accuracy ranges between 1% to 5% error. Logical consistency is a measure of the degree to which data complies with the technical specification. The test procedures are a mixture of scripts and on-screen visual checks.
Missing Data
- Comments
- Statewide coverage complete for Victoria in the form of roads class 0-3. Other additional roads classes 4-9 have been selected for completness at the targeted scale of 1:250,000
Excess Data
- Comments
- Complete as is from TR_ROAD. Revision of minor roads in forests. Feedback from Roads management Act work in form of declared roads by DSE.
