Purpose

Topographic mapping is a vital resource for the State of Victoria. It is used by the general public, State, local and Commonwealth governments, the private sector and academia. It uses are broad, including emergency response and recovery, recreation, navigation, site analysis, and asset management. Vicmap Topographic mapping utilises Vicmap, Victoria's digital spatial framework data. The objective of the Vicmap Topographic Mapping program is to provide current topographic mapping for all users in a number of different scales and map sizes and in both digital and hardcopy formats. History: The original Vicmap Publishing Program was active between 1974 and 1995. At that time, though not yet complete statewide, the program was halted. In 2004, due to user and government concerns over ageing topographic maps, the program was re-instated. The mapping products are created using an automated mapping system that dynamically produces topographic mapping from Vicmap, Victoria's digital spatial framework datasets. Related Documents: None

Dataset Source: Vicmap Topographic 1:25 000 was developed utilising three benchmarks: 1, The primary source of data would be Vicmap. 2, Features depicted would be the same features as the existing GeoScience 1:100 000 published topographic maps. 3, Feature specifications would be the same as specifications on the existing 1:25 000 published topographic maps.
