All Residual Depth Bore Controlled Gravity Outcrop Blanked
dataset:
BORES_RES_GRAVITY
This dataset provides bore controlled residual gravity bedrock depth. It contains the Victorian geological basement surface and the distribution of the basal aquifer derived using gravity data and controlled by all basement boreholes extracted from the Groundwater Management System (GMS) and Geological Exploration and Development Information System (GEDIS) databases. Depth is presented as depth below ground surface.
This technique was applied state-wide to the Upland Valleys, Murray Basin and Western Volcanic Plains. More reliable seismic and borehole data was used to map bedrock in the Gippsland and Otway Basin.
The dataset was compiled by GHD to inform the report 'Potential Influences of Geological Structures on Groundwater Flow Systems' for DEPI's Secure Allocation Future Entitlements (SAFE) Project.

- Dataset Source: Gravity grid and raw source data from DEPI datasets was re-gridded to 250m x 250m. The bedrock residual gravity technique is an approximate bedrock depth refinement technique that utilises simplified infinite slab gravity modelling approximations for sediment thickness and which gives a bedrock depth with detail that depends on the available borehole control on underlying regional, intra-bedrock geological/rock density variations. This has been mostly used to simply model the bore-controlled residual gravity bedrock depth for comparison with bores only bedrock depth mapping. The bore controlled residual gravity bedrock technique used data from: Free-air (FA) gravity; Bore bedrock depths; Outcrop outlines (which become zero bedrock depth, zero residual gravity and regional gravity control points); Interpolated (to the bores and outcrop edges) FA gravity values, and; Computed residual gravity values (gravity effect of overlying sediments only) at bedrock bores. The process for generating the map was: Interpolation of FA gravity to each basement borehole and outcrop location; Calculation of the theoretical gravity effect of Tertiary to zero at each outcrop location; Computing the bedrock regional effect by subtracting the theoretical gravity effect of Tertiary from FA at each basement borehole and outcrop location; Gridding the bedrock regional effect at each borehole and outcrop point to get an estimate of the regional gravity effect grid then subtracting this value from free air A to get residual gravity grid (RG); Converting RG back to detailed bedrock depth grid (BD) using the slab correction formula, and; Generating the bore controlled residual gravity bedrock map.
