Metropolitan Melbourne Heat Vulnerability Index 2018

dataset: HEAT_VULNERABILITY_INDEX_2018
This dataset contains heat vulnerability index features represented by polygons as at 2018. Each polygon is based on 2016 ABS Statistical Area Level 1s (SA1). It's part of a collection of data from Plan Melbourne Action 91 initiative also referred to as Cooling & Greening or Vegetation and Urban heat mapping. https://mapshare.vic.gov.au/coolinggreening/

Description

Title
Metropolitan Melbourne Heat Vulnerability Index 2018
Alternate title
HEAT_VULNERABILITY_INDEX_2018
Resource Type
Dataset
Purpose
This dataset has been produced to present areas of heat vulnerability in metropolitan Melbourne. The SA1 geography will assist users to perform spatial analysis to support policy and local decision making. Indicators of exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity were used for calculating overall heat vulnerability index. For details see `Urban Heat Islands and Heat Vulnerability Assessment in Melbourne.pdf. The heat vulnerability index (HVI) is represented by a scale of 1 to 5 based on quintiles, with 1 representing low exposure, low sensitivity or high adaptive capacity and 5 representing high exposure, high sensitivity or low adaptive capacity. An associated dataset on vegetation mapping has been produced for the same time period.

Statement
Dataset Source: The features are derived from the 2016 ABS Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1) boundaries, Landsat-8 derived Land Surface Temperature (LST) and vegetation by Mesh Blocks as at 2018 along with population and socio-economic data sourced from 2016 ABS Census. Comments
The Heat Vulnerability Index attribute is based on quintiles and therefore only 5 possible values exist. Multiple data sources are used to derive the indicators, and ABS data from 2016 has been used to assess heat vulnerability as of 2014. Due to attribute accuracy and timeframe misalignment of underlying datasets (e.g. the vegetation mapping) there is a possibility that a small number of SA1s have been assigned the incorrect quintile. To the extent these cases exist, the attribute accuracy should be +/- 1 quintile.
